We are Jo & Bry, and we live in the north west of Sydney, NSW.
I (Jo) have been involved with the Dogue de Bordeaux breed since 2003, mostly in a rescue capacity. I also had Rottweilers for 18 yrs & was actively involved in the Rottweiler Club of NSW holding various committee, and executive committee positions. I am a member, and now look forward to promoting, the Dogue de Bordeaux Club of Australia.
I am also a member of the Utility Dog Club of NSW (President 2013-2015, Secretary 2019-2022), and am a registered breeder with Dogs NSW (ANKC).
I got my first Dogue in 2003, which was a rehome with health issues. Through her I met a lot of great breeders, willing to help with advice & subsequently formed some very good friendships. This is what prompted me to start rescuing other Dogues in need, finding them forever homes & developing an excellent network of like minded breeders.
In 2009, Viva (Aust Ch. Bellarouge Genevieve) came to live with me. I enjoyed showing her to her Australian Championship title. In 2011, Vegas (Aust Ch. Bellarouge Ville de Peche) came into our lives. Having such a lengthy history with the breed, I am in the perfect position to make informed choices for the future of my kennel. I pride myself on my research & ethical approach to breeding, and future additions. Our dogs are family, they live inside with us, so we have limited dogs at any one time - and always making room for rescues! My opinion is that if you breed, you need to be prepared to rescue, or at least take back the dogs you've bred to rehome if the owner ever finds themselves in a position to be unable to care for them. Not all breeders are on the same level, and not all breeders will pick up the pieces of poor breeding practices - we do - no matter who bred them!
Although we do show at times, it's mainly for the social aspect as we have a lot of 'doggy friends' so it's a great way to spend the weekend. Our dogs have been competitive when they are exhibited, but we are definitely not focused on the show ring! We much prefer to help with rescue and rehome, as well as spending weekends away camping and 4WD'ing with our dogs. For us, the health and welfare of our dogs, and the breed in general, is far more important than a fancy ribbon! Besides we feel people who are looking for a breeder to buy from, wouldn't care about a bunch of achievements as that would mean absolutely nothing to them if their puppy develops severe health issues!
I am the President and one of the founders of Dogue de Bordeaux Rescue in Australia. I worked tirelessly to set up the rescue to be a government registered entity and charity, as I recognised that the need for our service increased. Being registered means that DDBR can legally accept donations, and donations are tax deductible. For more info visit www.ddbrescue.com.
I also have rescued other breeds, including Rottweilers, Bull Terriers, and even a Bull Arab! One particular Bull Terrier, fit in with my dogues so well, he stayed until we lost him in 2018. In Feb 2019, I found myself rescuing a Boerboel - who needed to be urgently picked up. Again, she fit in so well with my dogs and in our home, she too, stayed.
Responsible breeding is important. Through rescue, I have seen much heartache, being the result of poor breeding decisions & practices. Dogs that need to be put down before they are 2 yrs old, others dropping dead from underlying heart conditions, mange that needs expensive ongoing treatment & other crippling hereditary conditions – all easily preventable through ethical breeding.
I am here to help preserve the future of this breed. I am happy for people to contact me for a chat, advice, or re: rescues/rehomes. Non urgent enquiries via the contact form please.
